The Productivity of Chemical Reactors with Perfect Stirring Operated Batchwise or Continuously

Abstract:

Most commercial liquid-phase chemical processes, such as hydrogenation, alkylation, sulfonation, halogenation and others are carried out in tank reactors, which can be operated either batchwise, or continuously. The choice between batch systems and the continuous-flow system is an economical problem, but the productivity is, probably, one of the most important criteria in reactor type selection. This paper presents a comparative analysis of batch and continuous-flow tank reactor productivity, for chemical reactions of first, second and zero kinetic order. The reported data can be used for the fast establishing of reaction conditions for which continuous-flow stirred tank reactor has a better productivity than batch reactor, for the same chemical reaction.
