The Study of Exothermal Decomposition of Some Phenylhydrazinic Nitroderivatives Using Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Abstract:

Substances able to undergo exothermal chemical reactions may constitute hazards in various circumstances. Runaway and decomposition reactions in condensed phases contribute considerably to incidents in chemical plants as well as in other related areas. Frequently such reactions are the result of complex processes that start with moderate reaction rates and then, due to thermal and/or autocatalytic effects, the overall process is accelerated and finally may result in an explosion. Among organic compounds, the phenylhydrazine nitroderivatives, frequently used in chemistry, can undergo exothermal decompositions. The techniques of thermal analysis and particularly differential scanning calorimetry provide useful ways of examining the behaviour of such substances, in small quantities, under relatively safe conditions. From their thermograms the characteristic temperatures as well as the partial and total heat of reactions were evaluated. Analysis of conversion - time curves for isothermal measurements indicated the existence of both thermal and autocatalytic effects.
