The Analysis of the Main Mineral Elements in Foliar Buds of Some Medicinal Plants

Abstract:

The present paper aims at contributing to the certification of the therapeutic potential of vegetal buds, based on their content in some macro- and trace elements. Buds prelevated from eight plant species were harvested from the wild flora of the Apuseni Mountains (Romania): Abies alba, Betula verrucosa, Ribes nigrum, Populus nigra, Tilia tomentosa, Alnus glutinosa, Aesculus hippocastanum, Corylus avellana. For the Betula verrucosa samples, the content in minerals was assessed in relation with the development dynamics, by successive anlysis of closed and opened buds, small leaves, and mature leaves. The analysis were performed by atomic absorption spectrometry. Due to their high zinc and manganese content, buds of birch tree, alder, hazel and firetree display a particular therapeutic potential in oxidative stress-related disorders. The buds of blackcurrant could be employed as preventive/therapeutic tools in anemia, as they contain a high iron content (108 mg Fe/kg dry mass). In case of birch vegetal products, the optimum time for harvesting was established to be the phase of young leaves (befor maturity), when the content in mineral elements is highest. Key words: mineral elements, foliar buds, atomic absorption spectrometry, gemmopreparations
